Our History

The Mt. Zion AME Zion Church was organized on April 15, 1876 with the purchase of two acres of land from Martha E. Smarr for twenty-five dollars.  The Trustees of record and responsible for the purchase of that tract of land were Peter Edwards, Charles Leach and Edmond Jones.  The Reverend Byrd and members of the congregation held prayer meetings and worship services under a brush arbor until they could construct a building.  The building was soon constructed but was later destroyed by a storm.  In 1921 under the leadership of Reverend J. H. Hood and these hard working and dedicated Trustees:  Green Nichols, John Adams, Clugh Long, Hosley Bishop Good, Amos Ed Good, Mason Long and Alexander Feemster, a second church was built.  During those years of worship in that church, we were blessed to have some outstanding women who added greatly to the spiritual life of the church.  Their concerns were souls being saved.  Those women to be noted are Emma Belle Good, Mary Nichols, Mary Hames, Estelle Nichols, Emma Long, Mary Smarr and others. In 1956, the Trustees saw the need of a new place of worship.  The present building was in need of some major repair work.  With the support of the Pastor, Rev. Z. B. Wells and the congregation, a Building Fund was started.  Along with the Building Fund, individual members made pledges to buy a certain number of blocks to help build the church.  The Sanctuary was completed in August 1959, under the Leadership of Reverend M. B. Torrence.  The Trustees of record were Charlie M. Nichols, William E. Good, Charlie Long, Hosley Bishop Good, Oscar Nichols, Ernest Gwinn.  Junior Trustees were Herbert Long, Bill Thompson, Roy Thompson, James Thompson, Thomas Good, R. J. Nichols, Arthur Howell, Audry McCarter and Joe Long. In time, we found it necessary to add rooms and to renovate our present place of worship.  In 1971, the dining hall was added to the back of the sanctuary.  In 1976, two rooms were added to the front of the sanctuary.  All these structures were completed and covered with brick by the end of the 1976 -1977 Conference Year under the leadership of the Reverend C. H. Agurs.  In 1978 the dedication services and cornerstone set in place under the leadership of Reverend Mark E. Shelborne, Pastor; Reverend W. R. Jones, Presiding Elder and The Right Reverend Arthur Marshall, Jr., Presiding Prelate.  The Trustee of record were Charlie M. Nichols, Charlie E. Good, Clinzo Feemster, Thomas Good, Charlie Long, Harry James Good, Herbert Long, Curtis McCoy, Carl Bankhead, Fred Gill, and Hosley J. Good.  We are able today, to lift up the name of Jesus because of the work of these dedicated men and women who labor here for the cause of Christ and Zion. In 1997 under the church saw a need to build a Fellowship Hall. Under the leadership of Rev. E.M. Browning we constructed a fellowship hall and renovated the old dining hall to include the pastor’s office, his study, janitorial room, classrooms, and restrooms. In 2006 under the leadership of Rev. E.M. Browning we renovated the sanctuary. Rev. Frankie L. Smith was appointed to Mt. Zion in October 2006 while we were finishing up the renovation of the sanctuary. The Trustees of record were Joe W. Howell, R.J. Nichols, Vincent Long, Marvin Long, Harry Good, Dewilla Williams, Janice Gwinn, Laccie Patterson, Clyde Good, John M. Sanders, and John Howell. In 2014 we added restrooms to the front of the church and renovated the foyer.  In 2016 we added a video camera system to record our church service for the sick and shut-in. In 2018 we added surveillance cameras for the build and grounds and pave the parking lot. In 2019 a portable garage was purchase to house the church van on church premise.
